why some of y’all shouldn’t be invited back to the met gala

Well,

I don’t know about y’all, but one of my favorite events of the year is the Met Gala. It’s where you get to see fashion exceed all boundaries. It’s really an opportunity for celebrities and designers to get creative. Now if you don’t know what the met gala is I’ll give you a very brief explanation:

The Met Gala is an annual fashion exhibit hosted at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. It is run by Anna Winter, the editor-in-chief of Vogue. This event is pretty prestigious, it’s invite only. Well, I believe you can buy tickets for $30,000 but I don’t think anyone’s crazy enough to do it. Generally, every year there is a theme to the gala to which the exhibit follows as well as the red carpet fashion.

This year’s theme for the gala was, Camp.

“Camp” originates back from black drag/ queer culture. Its a style that values over the top, exaggerated silhouettes, its very theatrical & ironic, it’s unnatural, it’s a failure to be serious. What makes this aesthetics appealing is it’s “bad” taste and ironic value.

Now that you have an understanding of what the Met Gala is all about, it’s about to messy ladies and gentlemen.

When invited to something of such a prestigious honor, you’d think people would come dressed for the occasion. Since that’s basically the whole point of the event, to celebrate whatever fashion that applies to that year’s theme. But unfortunately, that’s not always the case. For some reason, every year, about half of the attendees to the Met Gala don’t dress on theme. This makes absolutely no sense to me (and many others if you check twitter lol). Why would you go to the Met Gala, to not dress to the theme??? It makes literally no sense at all to me as to why you wouldn’t dress appropriately. The event is a fashion exhibit. The entire thing revolves around fashion. The whole point of going, is for the fashion. Every year the Met Gala red carpet is such a huge deal in pop culture because everyone is waiting to see what everyone is wearing. What makes the Met Gala so exciting and special is that there’s not really any other event where it’s appropriate to go all out with fashion in such an artistic way. These celebrities team up with designers and spend months creating these wonderful wearable pieces of art and people have the audacity to just not follow the them. To be quite honest I think it’s somewhat disrespectful to the event to blatantly ignore the theme. Its like showing up to a white party in red. Its distasteful and rude. The person invited you to their white party, expecting that you, their guest, would have the respect for not only this party they’ve invited you to, but to them, to follow these rules.

If you wouldn’t show up to a white party in a red dress, why would you show up to the Met Gala in a black suit?

All I’m saying is that to blatantly ignore the theme of the Met Gala is just lazy. Especially with a theme like Camp. You have endless possibilities, why waste an opportunity like that? If you’re not gonna follow the theme, stay home and that’s all I gotta say about it.

Although there were many disappointments on the carpet, I wanted to show some of the looks that exceeded my expectations and really embodied the spirit of Camp.
